Description

Beit She’an is one of Israel’s most impressive archaeological sites. Once a major Roman and Byzantine city, it has broad streets, bathhouses, temples, theatres, shops, and public spaces that make the scale of ancient urban life easy to imagine. A private visit can focus on the city’s Roman grandeur, its earlier biblical history, daily life in the Byzantine period, or the dramatic earthquake that brought much of the city to an end. The story of Beit She’an is of a provincial town that became fully part of the Roman world, where the rhythm of life was set by markets, bathhouses, theatres, civic pride, and connections to a far larger empire.
