At the edge of Makhtesh Ramon, the Mitzpe Ramon Visitor Center looks out across one of Israel’s most dramatic desert landscapes. The centre introduces the formation of the makhtesh, the geology and wildlife of the Negev, and the story of Ilan Ramon, Israel’s first astronaut. It is a useful starting point before walking along the crater rim, travelling down into the makhtesh, or continuing toward Avdat and the desert highlands. The visitor centre brings together two very different scales of time: the life of one astronaut and a desert landscape shaped over millions of years by water, rock, erosion, and climate.
