Gamla stands on a steep ridge in the southern Golan, above a deep gorge and near one of Israel’s highest waterfalls. The ruins include an ancient Jewish town, synagogue, defensive walls, and the remains of a city destroyed during the Great Revolt against Rome. A private visit can combine archaeology, views, a walk to the waterfall, birdwatching, and the story of Jewish resistance in the first century CE. The route can be tailored for history, hiking, nature, or a broader Golan day. Gamla’s story is about a community caught between local identity and imperial power, with the steep landscape becoming both a refuge and a trap during Rome’s campaign in the Galilee and Golan.
