Tiberias grew beside the Sea of Galilee as a Roman city, a centre of Jewish learning, and a place known for its hot springs. Hamat Tiberias preserves an ancient synagogue with one of Israel’s most important mosaic floors. A private visit can include the synagogue mosaic, the hot springs area, the lakeshore, tombs of Jewish sages, and a wider exploration of Tiberias’s role in the development of rabbinic Judaism. The story of Tiberias is about adaptation. A city founded in the Roman world became a major Jewish centre after the destruction of Jerusalem, helping preserve and shape traditions that would travel far beyond the Galilee.
